Public Protection Classification
The Public Protection Classification (PPC) is the countrywide classification system used by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) to grade a community’s local fire protection. This grade is also used to set property insurance rates.
Effective December 1, 2016, the City of Helotes’ PPC was upgraded to CLASS 2 for residential and commercial properties that are within five (5) road miles of the fire station and within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant. This is an improvement from the previous CLASS 3 classification for these properties.
Any residential and commercial properties that are within five (5) road miles of the fire station, but are further than 1,000 feet from a fire hydrant will remain CLASS 3.
These changes occurred after a review by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). ISO then made their recommendation to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, who has authority and final approval.
These changes may save residential and commercial property owners on the cost of their insurance premiums.
